UW Outdoor Recreation & Tourism Management Degree

03:44
The University of Wyoming's newest degree program is aimed at expanding and diversifying Wyoming’s economy, retaining enterprising graduates in the state and recruiting highly qualified students. Students in the program will take a core curriculum that includes courses in business fundamentals, recreation and tourism, environment and natural resources, and social science. They then will choose an area of concentration from one of five different options: business and hospitality management; management of recreation resources; cultural and international tourism; outdoor recreation leadership; and creative studies in recreation and tourism. Each student also will participate in a “professional semester,” in addition to an internship, to gain intensive experience with a Wyoming business or agency. Graduates will be well prepared for jobs in Wyoming’s extensive tourism industry -- the state’s second largest economic sector -- as well as in government agencies involved in recreation, tourism and natural resource management. Creating and Sustaining Destinations for Tourism and Recreation

01:14:31
There is a natural attraction where the land meets the sea. Last year, many coastal cities experienced record-breaking years for tourism, with increasing dollars spent visiting beach towns, working waterfronts, historical and cultural landmarks, and increasing activities on the water, such as whale watching and wildlife viewing, recreational fishing, snorkeling and diving, surfing, and boating. While increasing tourism dollars generate revenues for local municipalities and businesses, increasing tourists create pressure on local services and infrastructure. CHOW 2015 will bring together local leaders from some of the nation’s iconic coastal places to examine how they are positioning their communities as world renowned destinations, while at the same time addressing the impacts from increasing visitors. Opening Remarks The Honorable David Jolly U.S. House of Representatives, FL-13 The Honorable Tammy Baldwin U.S. Senate, Wisconsin Moderator Lauren Wenzel Acting Director, National Marine Protected Areas Center, NOAA Discussants Craig Cates Mayor, City of Key West, Florida Tom Mlada Mayor, City of Port Washington, Wisconsin
